Keeping Cool in the Summer
It's going to be 90 degrees today, you don't have air conditioning and you don't live near the beach? You can still keep your cool by doing a few things that will keep the cool air in your house and keep the heat out. You can also use these tips if you have an absolutely scary electrical bill from running your air conditioning almost constantly.
First of all, open your house in the early morning hours and let the cool air in. When you see the temperature start to rise, start watching it and normally about 9:00AM you need to close your windows and this includes dropping the drapes on any window the sun is shining in on. If you have a window on an area in your house that is covered in shade, leave it open as long you feel a cool breeze coming in.
Next, opt for light clothing. Light colors and light fabrics preferably in 100% cottons will help keep you cool. Wear clothing styles that are not tightly form fitting, you want air to circulate around your body. Comfortable, flowing dresses, light skirts and lightweight cotton shirts and shorts are good bets. If you haven't already opted for a short hairstyle, pull your hair up off your neck and back in a ponytail or bun.
Ditch your regular shoes and opt for a
barely there pair of sandals, with leather uppers and skip anything plastic as it will trap your body heat around your feet. Sandals with a padded footbed will cushion every step you take and you can keep your feet cool and comfy.
Stay hydrated and drink lots of water. Tea and coffee, although made primarily of water, can actually dehydrate you so make sure you drink plain water if you are drinking a lot of iced coffees or teas. In most areas the hottest part of the day will occur around 6:00PM to 7:00PM in the summer, after that you can open your windows and let the cool air in and keep your house cool this summer.
Use these tips to keep your cool during these summer months and have a lower electric bill next month!
